Summer Vacation on a Budget

With summer right around the corner, it’s the time of year when it seems like everyone is on vacation or traveling to an exciting new destination. It’s a chance to reset and recharge, and if we want to wax poetic, enter a pocket of the world’s soul. But with so many possibilities and often limited time and money, when there is an opportunity to take a vacation, it’s important to choose wisely and plan accordingly. Here are some ways to plan a vacation so you can respect any time and money constraints without feeling like you’re missing anything important to you.

Deciding on your destination

You might have places on your bucket list, but if all the activities or sites that you would like to experience there are either too expensive or would require more time than you could realistically spend, you could end up feeling unsatisfied with your stay. If the priority is to feel like your money is being well-spent, it could be more productive to choose a place that is still important to you, but wouldn’t be quite as involved money or time-wise.

Deciding on important activities

Within a destination, there are all sorts of sites, activities, and experiences that are integral to the identity of a place. It’s not always possible to discover everything, but having an idea of what you’d like to prioritize during a stay is a good starting point. Do you care more about museums and historical experiences, or food and culinary discoveries? Are you interested in the outdoors and chasing scenery, or do you prefer a city setting? Are there hidden gems related to your particular interests, and are there events that you’d be interested in attending? All of these factors will influence how you structure your trip.

Deciding on time

You’ll need a certain amount of time to see and do all that is on your list of priorities. There might be a few days required to hit the “must-sees,” more time to reach the hidden gems, and even more time to fully understand the intricacies of how people operate with and within the place. If you only have a fixed amount of vacation time, it’s up to you to decide which activities you would insist on doing, which would be nice to see, and which would be optional.

Deciding on money

Another factor that will affect what sort of experience you have while you travel is, of course, how much money you can or are willing to spend. In making a list of the experiences that you’d like to have, it’s not only important to keep track of the amount of time those experiences would require, but also how much it would cost. Though the price for any airfare may fluctuate, each extra day involves costs for lodging and food, which should also be taken into account when planning an itinerary.

Deciding on splurges or saving

Sometimes, if you decide that it’s worth increasing your budget for a particular trip, you might have to cut back on spending elsewhere. If you do decide to include certain activities in your itinerary that would increase your vacation spending, you might find yourself having to make adjustments to your spending when you get back. As always, it’s a question of what you’re willing to cut, and for how long.

At Hush, we’re doing our best to guide people to hitting their financial stride and reach a point where they feel that their money is well spent, and that includes trips and vacations. After all, even if you’re lucky enough to have the opportunity to travel at all, there are only a limited number of trips that are possible to take in a lifetime; might as well make as many of them as memorable and fulfilling as possible.
